Questions & Answers
What are the advantages of liquid waterproofing?
• Good adhesion on substrates such as concrete, mortars, bricks, tiles, metal surfaces, etc. • Easy to apply, does not require skilled applicators. • Withstands weathering and UV rays. • Excellent color retention. • Excellent elasticity • Providing a continuous coating which does not need joints, filling and sealing all pores and cracks. • Maintains flexibility in a wide temperature range, expands and contracts along with the substrate to which it is applied. • Different colors, decorative finish. • Non-toxic and non-flammable, solvent-free. Environmentally friendly. • Low cost
What is the difference between water-based and solvent-based liquid waterproof coating products?
Advantages of Water-Based Coatings No solvent fumes (no bad smell, no breathing hazard and no special need for ventilation), Non toxic. Personal physical contact is not harmful, Equipments can be cleaned with water (no need for special solvent cleaner), Water-based coatings do not damage plastics or bitumen. Water-based coatings can be applied to both dry and damp surfaces. In case of a solvent-based coating, the surface must be dry in order for an application to be made. Disadvantages of Water-Based Coatings It may be physically washed off if rain falls onto a freshly painted water-based coating. It is susceptible to frost damage when wet and must be protected from frost during transport and storage. Advantages of Solvent-Based Coatings They produce almost immediate waterproofing protection after application, even before they have dried. Hence rain after application is not a big problem (however, rain before application is a much worse problem because they cannot be applied onto damp surfaces). They are not damaged by freezing temperatures. They often give better surface penetration and hence better adhesion to porous surfaces. Disadvantages of Solvent-Based Coatings Some solvent-based products can be harmful to health. They give off solvent fumes and hence require good ventilation. Most are flammable. They can attack plastics and bitumen. Applicators will require special protective clothing and special hand cleaner to remove splashes. Special solvents are needed to clean equipment after use. Solvent-based products cannot be applied onto damp surfaces.
What are the application fields of liquid waterproofing?
- Waterproofing of pools, water tanks, irrigation channels and pipelines - Waterproofing of damp areas such as bathrooms, kitchens and toilets - Waterproofing of all kinds of roofs, terraces, balconies, green roofs and etc. - Surface preparation and waterproofing of foundations, bridges, tunnels and etc. - Coating and protection of metal structures; tanks or silos, steel pipes and etc.
Should I use a Liquid Waterproof Coating or a Sheet Membrane?
Sheet membranes give a guaranteed membrane thickness, which is not dependent on the skill of the applicator. However, they do have an overlapping joint which, if not applied properly, can allow water to penetrate. Liquid waterproof coatings create a uniform coverage without creases or seams. The thickness and the amount applied can be varied and they are generally easy to apply by brush, squeegee, roller or spray gun. They are, however, more sensitive to good application as regards maintaining a uniform and correct thickness. The choice of sheet or liquid membrane really depends on personal preference as they are used for similar applications and they both provide effective waterproofing if correctly applied.
